AI for Mangrove Blue Carbon in Vietnam (AIMVIE)

Why
The carbon sequestration rate of mangrove forests is around five times that of terrestrial forests. Mangrove conservation is critical in tackling the global climage change. With over 138 thousand hectares of mangrove forests, Vietnam has an important role in conserving the world's magroves. However, in the recent decades, the country lost 38% of its mangrove forests due to coastal errosion, changes in landuse, and various other reasons.
What
The AIMVIE study helps to reverse the loss of mangrove forest in Vietnam by
  • Accurately map mangrove forests at a high resolution,
  • Comphrehensively assess carbon storage capacity of mangrove forests,
  • Provide a near real-time mangrove monitoring system that supports mangrove management and restoration.
How
Our methodology is based on the state-of-the-art AI and data fusion technologies that transform Earth observation data [including data captured by satellites and UAVs (Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles)] to actionable information.

News

The First AIMVIE Stakeholder Workshop has concluded. It was a great success with nearly 40 engaging participants, 3 highly informative keynote presentations, 2 lively group discussion sessions, and the practical, fun-packed UAV training programme. Thank you all for attending and contributing to the workshop. The workshop material will be shared with all participants in the coming days.

Dr Duong Cao Phan represents AIMVIE at an online consultation workshop organised by the Vietnamese Department of Forestry. The workshop is on the establishment and implementation of methodologies for quantifying carbon sequestration of mangrove forests. Tomorrow (19/05), Mr Nguyen Nam Son from the Department of Forestry will attend and deliver a keynote at the AIMVIE Stakeholder Workshop.

The agenda of the First AIMVIE Stakeholder Workshop is out! We are delighted to have three keynote speeches by Mr Nguyen Nam Son (Vietnameses Department of Forestry), A/Prof Dr Vien Ngoc Nam (Nong Lam University), and A/Prof Dr Tuan Quoc Vo (Can Tho University). The two-day workshop is packed with presentations and training in applications of Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for mangrove forest mapping. Over 25 participants from government agencies, NGOs, universities, and companies are invited to attend and contribute their expertise and view points. Check out the agenda in English and Vietnamese.

AIMVIE's Researcher Trung Nguyen Ly successfully defended his PhD thesis today at the National Central University in Taiwan. The thesis title is "A Field Study on Variation of Suspended Sediment Concentration Over an Intertidal Reef". Big congratulations to Dr Ly!

Six AIMVIE team members from Vietnam, Ireland, and Taiwan are joining a full-day consortium meeting today to review our progress with the stakeholder interviews and finalise the plan for the First AIMVIE Stakeholder Workshop later this month.

Welcome another member joining our AIMVIE team in Vietnam - Mr Trung Nguyen Ly. Trung Nguyen brings on board his expertise in wetland ecosystems. Our new researcher expects to complete his doctoral study at the National Central University in Taiwan this year.

We're welcoming Ms Jun Nguyen to the team as our Project Manager. Jun comes to AIMVIE with her impressive experience from her previous roles at multiple big tech companies in Ireland.

Press Release - Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris, TD, and Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora Sean Fleming, TD, today announced the funding for AIMVIE and five other projects that develop solutions to climate action challenges. Co-lead Tuan Quoc Vo and our Social Impact Champion Thuy Nguyen Thi Bich are attending workshop "Carbon From Mangrove Forests in the Mekong Delta: An Additional Revenue Stream under Payments for Forest Ecosystem Services (PFES)" in Ca Mau. The workshop is co-organised by the SNV Netherlands Development Organisation. Our AIMVIE members will be contributing their expertise and exchanging with stakeholders in the government, NGOs, and different companies working on the front line of mangrove conservation in Vietnam.

Dr Duong Cao Phan joins AIMVIE as a full-time Research Scientist. Duong received his PhD award from University of Tsukuba in Japan. His expertise is in remote sensing data analysis for land use, land cover (LULC) mapping. Check out this research highlight from Dr Phan, a LULC map of Vietnam published on the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's data platform.

The AIMVIE Study officially starts today! Co-leads Quan Le, Tuan Quoc Vo, and Anh Vu Vo are attending the project kick-off meeting with our SFI Scientific Programme Manager.
